Background of the Study
Assessing students' learning progress and understanding is a central function of university lecturers. However, preparing and maintaining a comprehensive and up-to-date question bank for assessments can be time-consuming and labor-intensive (Thompson et al., 2023). AI-based smart question banks offer a solution by automating the process of question generation, categorization, and evaluation, making it easier for lecturers to create and manage diverse assessments. These systems utilize natural language processing (NLP) and machine learning algorithms to automatically generate relevant questions based on the learning objectives, subject material, and the students' academic performance (Zhang & Zhang, 2024).
For Federal Polytechnic, Bida in Niger State, an AI-powered smart question bank could streamline the creation of assessments for lecturers, reducing their workload and allowing them to focus more on instructional activities. This study aims to design and implement an AI-based smart question bank tailored to the needs of university lecturers, improving the efficiency and quality of assessment processes.
Statement of the Problem
At Federal Polytechnic, Bida, lecturers face challenges in managing large question banks and ensuring that assessments are both relevant and diverse. The manual process of creating and categorizing questions for exams is time-consuming, and it may not always ensure balanced and accurate assessments of student knowledge. This study seeks to investigate the feasibility and effectiveness of AI-powered smart question banks in addressing these issues.
